Providence Publications Story

Providence Publications is a 26-year-old company, re-named in 1991 when it launched Workers’ Comp Executive, which has ever since been the journal of record for the workers’ comp industry in California.

Providence is proud to sell CATNIP: Credible Authoritative Trustworthy News and Information Products. It has a wide and varied stable of news and information products.

It was one of the first companies in the world to publish on-line databases including Compline which provides experience modifications factors and competitive intelligence to the insurance industry and others. It also publishes Verify! which is the world’s largest database of dead people. Verify! is used primarily as a fraud prevention tool.

Since that time, the company has continuously grown, adding to its holdings, starting new publications, and winning readers by living up to its motto: Credible, Authoritative, and Trustworthy. This is a year of great transition for Providence Publications as we complete the technological rewriting our content management system and prepare to migrate from print to strictly electronic and online. The entire “look” of all of our websites is about to change dramatically as we implement the new CMS, but our dedication to providing timely, in-depth and accurate news won’t waver and will be enhanced as we make the leap.

Our niche publications include Workers’ Comp Executive, which is the leader covering California’s $13 billion workers’ compensation industry. Week after week, Workers’ Comp Executive, through aggressive enterprise reporting, produces crisp, engaging news that our readers can use. The readership consists mainly of insurance executives, brokers, and self-insured employers, but also includes doctors, lawyers and players in insurance politics.

In 1993 Providence acquired Cal-OSHA Reporter, a newsletter that was launched in 1972. It is considered the ‘bible’ for and is the most widely read publication in the occupational health and safety industry in California. It is focusing on the regulatory environment and chronicling decisions by the Cal/OSHA Appeals Board, to which employers appeal citations. It is the citable source for California Appellate Courts in OSHA cases. It maintains the only database of every decision made by the Cal/OSHA Appeals Board since the Board’s inception.

In 1997, Providence Publications started the Appeals Board Reporter, which documents the decisions by California’s court system for injured workers, the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board, as well as cases appealed to higher state courts, including the state Supreme Court. With a semi-monthly publication schedule, Appeals Board Reporter is the most up-to-date legal publication covering workers’ compensation in California. The readership consists mainly of workers’ comp attorneys.

In 2007, Providence Publications started California Executive, a new style of publication – a portal that caters to businesses by providing them with news and other business tools they can use. It is a value-added netletter with a mission to assist business by providing up to date and current information about the latest developments affecting employers in healthcare, law, employment practices, immigration, finance and taxes and occupational health and safety.

Providence also publishes Pagehammer which is a web page monitoring tool used by individuals and organizations around the world.
